West Bromwich Albion assistant manager, Keith Downing, has warned his team not to get deluded from Liverpool’s poor stats, when they go head-to-head against them in a league cup fixture on Wednesday.
The Baggies will host Brendan Rodgers’ outfit in the third round of the domestic cup tournament.
Earlier, the two sides met on the opening day of the season, in which Steve Clarke’s men trounced the Reds 3-0 in a one-sided affair.
However, the West Brom number two was under no delusion about the potential of their opponents on Wednesday night.
He insisted that Liverpool are currently going through a transition period, and they were, by far, the better team against Manchester United in their last game, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat.
Liverpool have so far managed just 2 points out of a possible 15 in the league.
“I have watched them a couple of times recently and against Manchester United they were the better side, even with ten men,” he told the reporters in an interview.
“They are in a transitional period but there are signs Brendan is getting things right. It will be a tight game, I envisage another difficult game and I don’t think the first game will have much bearing on it.”
Despite experiencing a toilsome last season, the Reds lifted the League Cup, which put an end to their six-year long wait for silverware.
In total, the Merseyside club have won the League Cup on eight occasions.
The Baggies, on the other hand, will go into the game with an aim of keeping alive their ambition of securing their first major title since 1968.
Keeping in view what is at stake for both the teams, Downing thinks that the game promises to be an exciting one.
“As soon as the draw was made it was an exciting tie and to play against the cup holders is a good one, and also to play at home,” he added.
