Liverpool winger http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Stewart-Downing-c34221 revealed his ambition of cementing his place in the Reds starting line-up this coming term, and for that he was willing to play in any position for his manager.
The English International got his 2012/13 campaign off to a flyer, as he netted a spectacular long range shot during the Reds Europa League qualifier against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Gomel-c39117 on Thursday night. Liverpool won the match 1-0.
During the game, the forward was seen switching his position between the right and the left flanks from time to time, and was involved in the game in more than one way.
Even though the 28-year old is more known for his skills on the wings, he insisted that he was willing to contribute towards his team in any possible manner, and that solidifying his place in the starting eleven was his ultimate objective.
He told the reporters in an interview, “I'm not fussed, as long as I'm in the team. That's the main thing. The competition for places is hot here and wherever the manager sees me playing, I'm happy to play there. I got the goal from the right, but if he
wants me to play on the left I'm happy to do that as well.”
The goal against Gomel was only the winger’s third in 47 appearances for the Merseyside team, since his arrival at Anfield from Aston Villa in July last year.
Nonetheless, Downing unearthed that his scalp on Thursday night owed much to the advice of his manager, Brendan Rodgers. He explained that the Northern Irishman told him during the training sessions to take a shot or two from time to time from outside the
box, by cutting the ball inside from the flanks.
The forward then went on to hail his team-mates for their patient approach towards the game, and was specifically in awe for his defenders for keeping a clean sheet.
“They made it hard for us, but our patience paid off… We were lucky at times, but our back four defended very well.”
