I am a little confused on how all this works, is it possible to download a movie from a website in hd format(which I understand is MPEG-2,MPEG-4,etc...) burn it to a Blu-Ray disc and play it through a PS3 or Blu-Ray player? If so, do they even sell rewriteable Blu-ray discs?

  1. you can download bluray/hd films, but as the previous post said the files are huge , do a search for mkv files ( which are compressed and are less than half the size but keep the quality ) eg i found transformers 1080i was nearly 30gig , but the mkv file was only 10gig or so . once you have downloaded it you will need  software to put it onto disk  ,  and  dual layer dvd disk (pack of 10 for £8.00 on ebay ).

your ps3 like mine will upscale the picture , ( i find there is little or no difference . even ths sound is amazing ....

  2. They do make blu-ray burners, and burnable blu-ray discs.  However, they're pretty expensive right now.  You're looking at $300 for the burner, and $15 for a blank burnable disc. I don't know if they make rewriteable discs yet but they'd be quite expensive as well.

Furthermore, blu-ray movies average around 20-30GB in size, so unless you have a VERY fast internet connection that isn't capped, it's going to take a long time to download.

You're better off just buying them whenever Costco, Amazon or where ever, has a special or sale.

Now some companies are offering movies and TV shows in HD for download, such as Sony's Playstation Network.  You can either rent or buy these files.  However these aren't in the same format as blu-ray.  They're actually quite compressed so that they're only about 1 or 2 GB in size.  As you can guess, the video quality from these files isn't going to be nearly as sharp or clear as the same movie on blu-ray.  These files are also highly copy protected. They'll only play on the device you used to download them (e.g. your PS3) and cannot be burned onto a blu-ray disc to be played as a standard blu-ray movie.

  3. While the equpment is available for us to do it right now....The ONE THING stopping us is the fact that the MOVIE INDUSTRY does not want us to RECORD HD movies at all....

So...you may RENT downloadable movies and watch them, but actually BURNING THEM to a Blu Ray DVD is where they draw the line....

So I suggest you do your best in the Download arena, and forget the Burn arena.....at least for now.

Because they do have HDCP blocking their movies....Hi Def Content Protection....
