Download program safely?

I want to download the music sharing program Cabos (doesn't matter if you know what that is or not) from the internet. How do I know if the download is legite and not just a virus?

Does anyone know where I can get safe downloads?

Download only from well known websites like Download.com, Softpedia, SnapFiles. As for the rest rely on your firewall, on a good antivirus program, on your savvy and experience.
