I was trying to download some books on LIMWEWIRE as documents. I've heard that you can get viruses from it so I just wanted to know if it's ok.

  1. Nope.  If you have limewire installed, you have nasties.  It's too late, you're infected.  If you install the book you may in fact download even more nasties.

It's time for some cleanup.  Do the best you can with updated spyware and antivirus programs (legit ones that came bundled with a new computer or that you purchased, please!), and with web searching.  Then take the machine to any pro who will do free virus scans (Best Buy does 'em) and see if any infections are left.  You can then choose to pay them a couple hundred to remove it for you, or you can use your restore CDs to just wipe everything clean.  If you're broke, just do the restore yourself.  Also, don't pay anyone to just scan for malware.

Limewire's bad news.  I retired a computer to it in 2000, and have since learned my lesson!

  2. My viruses scanner and anti-spyware programs seem to do a pretty good job.  I have downloaded a number of books no problem.

  3. Check the file with an antivirus before you open it.
