Downloading digital pictures to the computer

Question

I have been downloading pictures with this camera for several years without any problems. Yesterday however, each time I tried to do it I get the message "cannot detect camera- check connection to camera". The plug is in tightly in both the camera and the computer. What could the problem be? Do I need a new wire to connect the two?
