He is for real, and he was saying it when he was younger too.  There are many reliable people, including military officers, policemen, and other Astronauts who have seen alien spacecraft.  

The Rendlesham Forest incident is perhaps the most important UFO event to have ever occurred, it was witnessed by many USAF personnel from RAF Bentwaters/Woodbridge in Suffolk, December 1980.  They even walked around the ship and touched it.

The story was recounted with the help of Colonel Charles Halt, who was the deputy base commander at the time and also witnessed the UFOs.

In November 2007, Charles Halt received several emails from a security guard, who was posted in observation tower: “He has given me quite a bit of correspondence, and he verifies the fact that on that night he was in the tower, he actually saw beams coming down into the weapons storage area, simultaneously while we saw it near our feet in the field.”

Sigh. Can anyone tell me why the government and scientists would cover-up something as amazing as finding intelligent life in the universe? If we made contact with aliens scientists would be jumping up and down for joy. It would have major implications on our understandings of life in the universe and its origin and evolution on earth. Right now scientists are poring their own sweat and blood out just to find even the slightest sign of life in the universe. The discovery of alien bacteria or microbes would have the scientific community in a frenzy. But no, 77 year old Edgar Mitchell is right, we've known about intelligent alien life for decades and are keeping it secret. NASA is spending billions of dollars to find alien microbes as a means of covering it up, make it look like they don't already know there is intelligent life in the universe. Give me a break.

I think some of his opinions are probably considered a bit "outre", but he's not significantly more looney than many people running around with opinions that differ from the norm.

Watch the movie Contact... they say it well.  When you REALLY think about how immense the universe is, how many milions of other star systems and billions of planets... if there isn't other life out there, isn't that a whole LOT of wasted space?
