Dragonfish leaping out of tank! HELP!

My dragon fish is leaping out of the tank and I can't seem to keep him safely contained. Ideas?

Also, why do they do this?

And... he looks scaley? Almost like he is molting, like a snake? What should I do?

  1. clean out his tank and get a lid that has holes in it so he can breath and not leap out. also maybe he is not getting enough oxegen so try filling the tank up not as much water, maybe thats why he is leaping out, to get air. I don't know though.

  2. Apply a mesh screen to the top of the tank where he is jumping out. You can make these or buy them at a Petsmart/Petco, although I am not sure they carry them. They are usually for snakes who like to escape! As to why they do this, sorry I don't know much about fish...:-/

  3. I'm not too sure about this, but I think dragon fish and arowanas are similar if not the same. You need to cover the top with a canopy or a mesh cover like suggested above, but if he is fairly large and those mesh covers dont always fit snug and tight, you need to put something on top to hold it there in case hes strong enough to jump out with the cover on (a large rock maybe).

  4. i have no idea what a dragon fish is

    any pictures?

  5. my brother owned a dragon fish and this is usual because dragon fish are natural jumpers what he did was put his tank lid on nice and tight and filled the tank up all the way the fish hitting the hood is like it bumping into the glass sides so don't worry

about the scaly question they are the closest relative to the moray eels they are not snakes and do not molt they are fish so it is usual that they are scaly

i logged on and saw the answer below mine and dragon fish can actually come to the surface to breath because they live in low oxygen water that most fish cant live in
