Drain for A-Coil?

Question

I had a new furnace and heat pump installed about 6 months ago. The furnace was placed in a large closet area in the middle of the house. The HVAC guys ran the drain from the A-Coil down into the crawl space and stopped it there. Is this code? Are they allowed to just let it drain into the crawlspace? I am trying to figure out if I need to call them back to finish it.

HVAC Tech.: That will depend on what code (if any) is in your area. That said, your unit removes over 5 and as much as 18 gallons of water from the air every day. It would be better to put it in a city drain.

A call to your local city building inspector can answer this question.  Without knowing where you are, it is pretty tough for us.  Codes vary according to where you live.

This is not a big problem - it just needs taken care of.

In defense of the HVAC guys, remember they did do everything they were supposed to do, however they probably did not have a place to drain the pan. You cannot always run it into the sewer line, this is against code some places.

They could have ran a flexible line or cvpc line out the foundation.

You don't want that water in your crawl space. Ask them to come back and help resolve the problem. Tell them you understand they did not have much choice where to run it, but you need their expertise in coming up with a better solution.

Sometimes, a little compliment on the job they did, and a little sense of helplessness on your part - will result in a quick and nominal cost fix.

What you do want is for that line to have a trap in it. If not sewer gas,bugs,etc., can crawl back up that drain line.

Sometimes companies never get a " thanks for a good job" statement at the end of a job. That means a lot to those of us in the construction business.

you don't need moisture emptying under your home

your house will wick the water and that will lead to other problems

CALL THEM BACK  the line should stop none short of the exterior wall
