  2. V-F:

    Configure the 555 in astable mode. By applying a voltage to pin 5 you can vary the frequency (on pin 3) independently of the RC network on pins 6 and 7. The voltage can be varied from 45% to 90% of Vcc.

    F-V:

    Configure the 555 in monostable mode. The 555 puts out a fixed time-width pulse determined by the R and C on pins 6 and 7. Convert the input frequency to a short pulse using a differentiator (series capacitor OK, with a diode connected to Vcc to prevent the input to the 555 exceeding Vcc). This signal is connected to the 555 on pins 2 and 4 and triggers the monostable. The output (pin 3) is then filtered to a steady voltage.
