Question:

Drawback to a four day work week

I am trying to think of some bad reasons for the four day work week. My company (JB Hunt) has the man power to pull it off, keeping things running during the week (some small companies might not have the man-power). Half the staff works monday through thursday, second half work tuesday through friday. I need to know some drawbacks to this. I am going to present the question, but i need prepared for what they may ask in return. So far, its hard coming up with a good solid arguement against a four day work week (me thinking of both for and against). I need a good debater.

  1. I like the idea of a 4 day week myself, but here's a few web site addresses that give pros & cons for the idea.

  2. The only reason I can think of is that overall production may be reduced because of the extended hours. A long time ago, it was decided that an 8 hr. day was the ideal, with the necessary "breaks" of course.  Only time will tell if the production remains the same with four ten-hour days.  Some other companies are doing it, but in the long run only time and statistics will prove its worthiness.  I know this: Generally production decreases on the first day of a three holiday and picks up as the week progresses.

  3. The biggest drawback I can see is that you would have to work an additional two hours each of those four days to make up for the extra day you're getting off.  Personally, I would rather work five 8-hour days than four 10-hour days...

  4. I would love to have a four day work week and three days off.  Sorry..I just can't help you.
