I am making my friend a Dread Doll for her birthday and while making it I am surprised to find how much i love doing it, and how the details are really making her feel special.

I call it a Dread Doll because the hair is dreadlocked in the one I am doing now, and it's kind of like a Worry Doll, where as you tell this one what your fears are and what is stressing you out. The doll has buttons for eyes but no mouth, there to listen only.

As a stay at home mom trying to help out with finances I began thinking about making dolls to specification to sell. Each doll and it's dress or clothes would be made completely by hand by myself. So each one would be completely one of a kind, in every way. How much would you pay for a doll like that.

  1. there will always be a market for dolls and teddy bears for women of all ages.

  2. My sister has a friend who makes handmade dolls and she started out by charging $35 (Australian) each for them.

After a while she had sold one or two to all her friends and family so began going to local markets and within a short space of time found she could charge $50 each.

Hers are a different sort of thing to yours, but people do appreciate good handwork and skill.

You could start by considering how much your materials cost and also look for similar type dolls in local shops (not the big commercial names, but the specialty places. If you charge about half as much as a commercially made doll, and still make a profit, you are in a good position.

There are also some doll groups online, try googling them for extra info ~ but don't give all your secrets away, or someone else will be making a profit from your idea!

    Cheers :-)

  3. please change the name "dread doll" is just creepy!
