Dream about things that don't work?

I have a reoccuring dream about fighting people who are trying to hurt someone that I know or myself. The dream is always exactly the same, but the theme is always similar. I'll have a weapon or I'll be fighting empty handed, but the people I fight are unaffected. I'll shoot a gun and either the gun will fire and the bullets won't do anything or the gun is empty. If it's a melee weapon, I'll hit them or stab them with it and they are unharmed. If I'm fighting with no weapons I'll try certain moves that I learned in my martial arts class, but I'm not able to move them. I'm not sure what this means exactly I thought maybe someone could tell me.

  1. For a reason that only you may know, you are feeling the need to defend yourself right now but haven't been successful in finding a way to do so. Fighting in a dream signifies that you need to be defensive, having weapons that don't work means that the way you are defending yourself isn't working or that you feel defenseless. You don't say whether you know the people you are fighting or not. If you know them, then it is these people or what they represent that you are defending. If you don't know them, then you are having conflicts that you don't know quite how to solve, thus being "defenseless."

  2. It means you need to evaluate your own motives.

If you have a tendency to get defensive while you are awake, your dreams may be letting you know your emotional outbursts are unjustified. It is easy to disregard 'nagging' if it happens a lot. Equally, if you use emotional explosiveness to express yourself daily, it can be written off as temperament, rather than issues of importance.

Even if the idea above is entirely incorrect, knowing your motivation is key.

  3. Maybe you feel impotent. Like your masculinity is not effective.

Growing up, did your Dad overpower you?

  4. Problems are what those people represent, issues, cases of things that have happened in the past, you must still have yet to deal with your past. No matter how hard you fight it will be there unchanged, standing as a predator to gnaw away at the last threads of what you thought would defeat it. There are some things you must accept that have hurt you in your past, these types of figures strongly represent that past that you must accept, communicate with them in your next dream. Instead of throwing punches or kicks just try catching what they throw and confronting them. Ask what they represent directly if you are able to control your mind within the subconscious dream world. If not, then do not be afraid, they will be as fierce as you can imagine until you get to know them. These images, people who attack you in re-occurring dreams may be there to stay, or they may leave after you no longer fear them. The best thing would be to keep a dream journal beside your bed and record every detail about them, names, description, the way they made you feel... etc. details
