What does this dream mean?

I stopped smoking a couple days ago (I didn't really smoke much to begin with, maybe 4 cigarettes a day) Ever since then I have been having bad nightmares that revolve around my 1 yr old son. All of my dreams are about me forgetting my son or leaving him behind somewhere and no being able to get back to him quickly enough. Something bad always happens to him because I left him behind. What could this be about? I am on a smoking cessation but a very small amount, about 1/10 of of recommended daily treatment and never before bed.

  1. I had similar dreams involving my infant daughter and I've never smoked a cigarette in my entire life.  Yes, it could be stress-related because I've been under the gun to find new employment, so maybe it's a side effect of the stress you've been under to stay off of cigarettes.

Those types of dreams can be the most terrifying, but usually the ones who dream of losing their child somehow are the ones who never will.  I'm very protective of my daughter, yet I've had nights where I've been awakened out of a sound sleep, only to find myself rushing into my daughter's nursery to make sure she actually IS in her crib.

Just keep doing what you're doing, stay clean and take solace in the fact that these dreams are just an indication that you're a very good parent who cares about her child.  The ones who DON'T care about their kids never HAVE this type of dream.

  4. Dreams of younger family members are a reflection of how we see our inner, younger selves. What ever the motivation that made you quit smoking- some decision you made, and the why of it, is causing your subconcious to doublethink. Am I forgetting something? Should I get rid of this part of myself? Oh, no, CHANGE!!! Stuff like that. When you realize you are dreaming this again (tell yourself this before you go to slep), remind yourself your are 'forgetting' some part of you, not your son. Then, in the dream- let it go... forget it, and see where you go next. It IS only a dream, and not about your son. Once you have accepted the why of it, see where this growing (for that is what it is) will take you.
