German second division side Dynamo Dresden have been thrown out of the DFB-Pokal for one season because of continued crowd troubles at their games
Dynamo Dresden have been excluded from the cup competition and will not be able to take part in the DFB-Pokal next year following persistent crowd disturbances. A few of their fans lit flares and damaged Hannover 96’s Niedersachsenstadion
stadium during the two sides’ German Cup meeting in October.
The incident happened in the second round tie of the DFB-Pokal. On the other hand, Hannover have also been punished and fined € 70,000 for not being able to control the situation. Dresden have been banned from the cup because of
a string of prior events.
The German Football Association grew tired of the second division team’s behaviour in cup games and the Hannover match was the boiling point for the DFB. The sentence is very strict and the fans will be disappointed to hear the
bad news as the cup games were always very energetic.
DFB sports court judge Hans E. Lorenz claimed that Dresden were rightly punished and deserved to be stripped off their cup participation. He stated that such violent reactions from supporters in the stadiums are very dangerous
for the future of the game, and precaution was necessary to prevent such events from happening again.
"The punishment for Dresden boils down to the many previous incidents and the extent of the disturbances at the cup game in Hannover," German Football Association's (DFB) sports court judge Hans E. Lorenz was quoted as saying in
an interview.
"Such attacks on stadia are attacks on football in general which require consequential action,” he added.
"Last year, we warned them explicitly that they risked being excluded from the competition after incidents in Dortmund," the finally concluded.
Lorenz suggested that Dresden were given a warning last year as well, after the events that occurred in Dortmund’ stadium Signal Iduna Park. Some 200 Dresden fans came onto the pitch after their team lost the game on penalties,
and there were riots with the BVB supporters inside the arena and also outside the stadia.
