Dressage scores!?

I'm about to do my 1st ever dressage test, ( intro, walk and trot ) and just wondered what would be a reasonable score to expect, novice horse and novice rider. Although we have been practicing like crazy!!!

PS Am scared silly, am really intimidated by the thought of a judge watching me ride!

  1. You will probably do really good... just make sure you are confident and try not to go too crazy in the nerve department... just keep practicing and you'll probably do great...

    GOOD LUCK

  2. around 65-70 would be fantsatic but it depends on the judge :)

    Good Luck

    top answer please :)

  3. It depends.

If this is a schooling show, you can easily get a 60-65, or even a 70.

If it is a harder show with a more experienced judge, you may get a 50-60.

  4. Oh gee, my first dressage show, everything they judged was out of 10. When i walked down the first line in the middle my horse spooked and swerved then stopped and wouldn't get CLOSE to the judges stand. I got a 5. The rest i got 6's and one 7. So, expect an overall score of about 60/100. lol

  5. Okay - just be prepared.

By this I mean when you break down your dressage test think of all your aids you are going to use. So say its walk in, halt at x. Be thinking I'm going to do a nice straight walk up the centre line, is he moving forward, nice and snappy covering ground, balanced in both reins. Prepare to halt etc etc

By thinking of your aids and what you have to do for each section you won't have time to be nervous.

Your dressage test will go so fast. Try mentally, when lying down, pretending you are in the arena it is similar to home and envisage everything going perfectly right through the test. Do this many times till you are calm.

Tips for calming down on the day, allow plenty of time for collecting back number etc. I'm at the ground a minimum of an hour and a half prior to my test. Do your walm up just as you do at home then just before you go out to do your test have one last walk on a long rein, soft and relaxed. Then prepare, round up and off you go.

VERY VERY BEST OF LUCK. ps I am always nervous, but I loved it just the same and try to never let my horse feel my nerves. Even if everything goes wrong I still enjoy it. And the judges I've written for are just hoping each rider is going to do well. They are also disappointed for a good combination when things go wrong.

  6. Hi there, try not to be too nervous and just have fun. I wrote for a dressage judge the other day and all he commented on was how scared people looked! Much better that you go into your test with a big smile and just do it like you have practiced at home. I would expect you would get 60% + depending on the other competitiors and the judge.

    Good luck!!
