  1. The best advice I can give is to try and get as much done the night before the show as possible.  Get your horse clean (unless he/she lives outside and likes to roll:)  I always put a lightweight sheet on mine and wrap their legs in polowraps to keep socks clean.  Get everything organized, and if possible, load the trailer.  Make a list of everything you need to bring, and make sure to bring an extra halter and lead rope, just in case.  In the morning, double check that you have everything... I once forgot my bridle going cross country jumping!  Luckily my friend is always prepared and had an extra!  I always bring lots of extras, because you never know what might happen!

As for the day of the show, make sure you give yourself plenty of time.  You don't want to have to rush ANYTHING!   THis will just stress you out and have adverse affects on your performance.  I always spend a lot of time warming up, just because my horse has energy to burn!  I've found that working on relaxing (you and your horse!) and stretching down is good prep for dressage.  It all depends on your horse though.  Right before you go in the ring, it is nice to have a buddy check that you look fantastic, and wipe off any specks of dirt on you or your horse with a towel.

Lastly, don't come in expecting to win the blue... You might, and that would be great, but if you are a perfectionist (like me...) you will beat yourself up for not winning everything.  Instead make a goal for yourself and your horse, and strive for that, instead.  Example:  I want smooth downward transitions and to keep the forward impulsion in my trot.  (Obviously yours will be tailored to fit your horse :)

    Hope this helps!!!

  2. Most people would relate it closely to ballet on horse-back. Dressage comes from the french word "to train"

if you are showing Training level, the judge looks for a steady rhythm and that the horse is going forward in a supple and free way. In other words the horse should be round and moving at a good working trot

If you are showing at First Level it is the same as Training Level with the addition that the horse has developed thrust (pushing power) and achieved a degree of balance and thoroughness.

In the show ring some good small tips: tell the judge your number when youre going outside the ring.  When they ring the bell you have 45seconds to go around the arena. look like you are having an easy and fun time( it's more enjoyable for the judge and probably yourself) After your final salute thank the judge and walk out but don't take all day. they hate that

  3. aside from the other great tips you have gotten, i would like to add that you can garner lots of points by riding the test ACURATELY.\

when going up center line , make sure that you dont make the turn too soon, go deep into a or c before you turn.  if u turn to soon you will waste several strides trying to get him straight on center line again.  also, you will want to make sure that you ride deep into all 4 corners of the ring.  this will help you make a truely round circle instead of eggs.  practice your tests at home and then practice, practice and practice somemore.  if you feel unsure of your memorization abilities under pressure at a show, you should also practice with a reader at your home, and then have them read for you at the show.  it isnt really fair to throw the test into someones hands at the show, and expect them to be able to read it for you without really messing you up, becasue they are too fast or slow.  so in a nutshell, whatever you plan on doing at the show, needs to practiced to ad nauseum at home.  best of luck:)

  5. Its all about how obedient your horse is to your cues. You need to make sure you know the test and know it well (even if you do have a reader, you dont want to have to depend on then totally) Make sure you do each movement that the correct letter(s), being extremely precise. If it says halt at A, then you halt at A...not 3 steps past it. Just stay focused on what you your doing, and plan ahead for each movement, prepare your horse for what you will be asking him.

Also make sure you and your horse are properly groomed and wear the proper attire, you want to have a good presence in the ring, Sloppy is a very very bad thing in dressage.

Make sure to practice the test over and over before the show, so you know it and so you know your horse is capable of doing all the movements...if not you need to change your division.

Best of Luck at the Show, and Have fun!! :)

  6. well, dressage is sport to show the bond and the understanding b/w you and your horse. It is a sport in which you are to show the judges how well your horse ca listen to you. The key to wining in dressage is to be EXTREMELY PRECISE. Every move you make will make a huge difference in your score, if you mess up or if your horse does something unexpected then they give you penalty points. If you want to win, you have to show the judges how well you are connected to your horse

    GOOD LUCK
