Drew Gooden makes a career move; Signs with chicken wing franchise Wingstop – NBA update
Lockout is starting to give migraine to all NBA players.
While most of them have been chasing opportunities in foreign land, some like Delonte West have opted to stay in town and carry out a normal 9 to 5 job. Same goes for Luke Walton, who just two days ago decided to explore his coaching
abilities after he signed with University of Memphis as an assistant coach.
But then we have Drew Gooden.
The man who was out of picture throughout the summer is finally back with a bang. The question that rises here is where had he been hiding all this summer?
He was not spotted in any exhibition matches nor was he seen in the lockout negotiations. Let the suspense end then. The mystery man was chasing chicken wings all this summer. Yes, you heard me right.
Drew Gooden is the face of reputed national hot wing chain ‘Wingstop’. It has been learnt that Gooden has signed a multi-unit contract with franchise to open four restaurants in Orlando over the next few years.
He along with his operating partner, George Taylor have put together a Zerocon Food Systems, LLC and plan to open their first restaurant coming January. Commenting on his new career move Drew added
“With the lockout, a lot of us are thinking about our futures and looking for new business and investment opportunities,” said Gooden. “I’ve been a big fan of Wingstop for years, so this is a perfect fit for me.”
Dave Vernon, vice president of franchise sales for the company seems pretty thrilled with Gooden’s inclusion in the franchise. He added
“Drew Gooden and Wingstop are a winning combination,” said Dave “Drew has shown great enthusiasm for the brand and a strong head for business throughout the franchise process. He also brought on a strong operational partner in
George Taylor III, which will help ensure his success in Orlando.”
Drew Gooden last played for Milwaukee Bucks and managed to finish with a decent average of 11.3 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He recorded his first triple-double the same season scoring 15 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists.
Originally selected by Memphis Grizzlies in 2002, Gooden has represented 8 different teams in his nine years career so far.  The only team where he spent more than a year is Cleveland Cavaliers 2004-2008.
He is not a hall of famer but a decent performer – a sort of player who makes valuable contributions occasionally.
My gut feeling is that the guy who often stunned the crowd with his unusual beards is more likely to succeed in this business. Playing for NBA was not a move he would ever regret, but his new career move might lead him to fame
that he failed to reach playing in NBA.
