Drew Smyly hoping to grab fifth starting spot– MLB News
According to a reputed sports website, Detroit Tigers might ask Drew Smyly to play in the big league this season for the first time in his career. Smyly was absolutely sensational in Minor League system last year. Pitching with control and accuracy, he made the most of available opportunities.
Not only is he young and dynamic, he also has the ability perform well even in tense situations. If he can secure a spot in Tigers’ 40 man roster, he will have an excellent opportunity to polish his game. With the likes of Justin Verlander in Tigers’ pitching line-up, the left handed pitcher can learn new skills and tricks right from the beginning of his Major League Baseball (MLB) career.
In an interview, Tigers’ general manager Dave Dombrowski stated that he will fly to Florida soon to watch Smyly and others work out in the during the practice session. According to sources, some of the officials in Tigers' management have been trying to convince Dombrowski that Smyly has the temperament and potential to become an MLB player.
"I wouldn't be surprised to see Crosby keep taking a step forward," he further added. "But one guy I'm interested in seeing because I've not seen much of him, is Smyly.”
"He not only pitched well in the minors last year, but he went to international competition (Pan American Games) and was the No. 1 pitcher on that team. In general, when you look at guys who've been successful in international competition, the majority of them end up pitching in the big leagues the next year,” said Dombrowski.
Smyly has performed brilliantly in the Minor League and in Pan American Games he was one of the best pitchers in that competition. With his ability to pitch multiple innings, he can be the potential ace for the Tigers in future. He will be looking to train hard to secure the fifth starting spot in the Tigers pitching line-up this season.
The Tigers wanted to sign Jacob Turner for the fifth starting position. However, as Turner hasn’t confirmed his availability as yet, Dombrowski may provide other young pitchers a chance to prove their metal. Smyly’s main competitor for the "starting spot grab" will be another left hander, Andy Oliver.
