Drew Smyly moved to 15-day Disabled List – MLB Update
According to a leading sports website, Drew Smyly is placed on the Disabled List and relief pitcher Luis Alfredo Marté from Toledo will come to complete the 25 man roster. In some ways, it has turned out to be an extraordinary season for Detroit with both
Tigers and the Mud Hens exchanging several players.
Marté made his debut with the Tigers last season and he pitched effectively to impress everyone. He will be looking for a chance to cement his place. Manager Jim Leyland and General Manager Dave Dombrowski will be very pleased to see this kind of depth in
Tigers’ Minor League system.
The left handed starting pitcher, Smyly will be placed on a 15-day DH after getting a strain in his rib muscle. Smyly was taking part in a workout session when he realised the strain was not healing.
The injury that Smyly suffered before the All Star Break will now keep him out of the game at a critical time for his team.
The Tigers are placed second on the American League Central Division standings. Preserving their key players can be an answer to success for them in later stages of the season. Smyly did have a chance to recover from the injury over the All Star Break but
it seems he will need some more time to get fully fit and healthy.
“Bad timing,” he said of his latest move to the disabled list. “I was felt like I was really starting to figure it out, get on a little bit of a roll. Then this happens.”
“This was a total shock to me,” Leyland said in a post game interview.
“I gave it a try (and it) didn’t work out that well,” Smyly said Saturday, “got to wait it out.”
The source further revealed that Jacob Turner is likely to replace him. If Smyly can prove himself fit in the next few days, he can be allowed to make his next scheduled start on July 22. Smyly gave decent results in his last two outings and he will be looking
to continue his good work after recovering from the strain.
