Drew Storen, Ryan Zimmerman satisfied with Davey Johnson’s appointment – MLB Update
Davey Johnson took control of Washington Nationals in 2011, almost during midseason. This was his first managerial task in Major League Baseball for 11 years and Johnson lived up to the expectations of many, in the truest sense.
The Nationals were lingering at the bottom of National League East division before the All-Star break, but showed immense improvement in the depth of the season, winning 40 of the 83 games which Johnson managed and losing just 43. Given the performance during
the first half, terming Johnson’s effort as decent will not be going overboard.
Johnson pointed out that he had little time to judge players and their usefulness to the ballclub, thus failing to make a significant impact on the results. However, now that he has a more clear picture of the ballclub, Johnson feels that the team has enough
talent and character to go all the way through to the World Series.
The manager asserts that his managing style is unique and that players will enjoy playing under him. Ryan Zimmerman and Drew Storen agreed with Johnson and showed contentment with the management’s decision to sign him for 2012.
Explaining Johnson’s managing style, Storen said, “He really trusts us and our talents. If we struggle one game, he’s not going to panic and try to change. He sticks with guys. He was composed every day. There’s no panicking. Guys really like that there’s
no panic mode for Davey.”
Storen added that Johnson likes to stay low-profile and does not lose temper quickly. He continued that the manger knows how to motivate players and how to keep everyone onboard, which is a rare talent. Storen opined that Johnson knows how to keep a balance
and that will be important for the team when the season opens in 2012.
Zimmerman, however, asserted that Johnson’s character and experience earned him immediate respect from the dugout and his autonomy to handle affairs has a lot to do with his close relationship with the general manager.
Rest assured, Johnson’s appointment will ensure stability in the ballclub and the manager will not leave midseason. Although Johnson did not get a nod for 2013, Johnson will stay at the ballclub for a significant time.
