Drew Storen undergoes elbow surgery as he sits on 15-day disabled list - MLB Update
Closer Drew Storen goes through elbow surgery successfully as per the words of his agent. Bone fragment from his pitching elbow has been removed and as soon as he completes the rehabilitation process, he will be available for the Washington Nationals.
Considering the fact that pitching in depth is tough for pitchers and only handful of those are capable of handling the pressure, the talent he has in this regard will be a great advantage for the team.
However when Nationals’ general manager, Mike Rizzo was asked about his chances, not issuing any timeline, as he gave a wait and see kind of impression.
He stated that Storen will be appearing in front of the media soon and will tell for himself as to where he stands for the regular season.
Despite the fact Nationals possess one of the most feared pitchers already on their roster, having Storen is altogether a different preference for them.
While they can draw fiery starting innings from Stephen Strasburg and Gio Gonzalez, the man best suited for the save in the ninth is Storen.
His career stats speak volumes of his ability to come out successful under pressure situations.
Massive number of 48 saves stands in stark contrast to his win-loss record of 10-7 and in turn re-enforces an assumption of his being a specialist for saving games.
By looking at how the Nationals fared in their last three season games, one will point out their inability to pull off victories at a time when given the kind of talent they possess.
As it turned out it was the pressure that eclipsed their potential.
Even in the game against New York Mets, when in the ninth Henry Rodriguez fell to pressure and threw a loose pitch as a result costing them a defeat, the teams vulnerability in the season was easily visible.
No way less capable, Henry’s naivety in the game was an issue however and in this respect immense experience of Storen can give Nationals a rather reliable closer to go with in the games.
It was unfortunate for Storen to start the season on 15-day DL. With faster rehabilitation and few Minor League outings he can make a comeback.
One will hope that his surgery will improve his elbow and allow Storen to keep up his tremendous performance for the team.
