Drill to fly down to Delta Downs to participate in the Delta Downs Jackpot for trainer Bob Baffert
The 2-year-old Bob Baffert trained colt, Drill worked three furlongs in a bullet ahead of the all important Grade 3, $1 million Delta Downs Jackpot at Delta Downs in Vinton, La., as he topped the distance in 35.40 seconds at Santa Anita Park.
The juvenile colt will be flown to Delta Downs on 16 November to participate in the $1 million event which is to be held on 19 November, 2011, over Delta Downs dirt track. The race will be run over at 1 1/16 miles and it is strictly for 3-year-old males.
Baffert said about his colt that “I just worked him this morning,” Baffert said Monday. “He worked well. It looks like he didn’t really run in the Breeders’ Cup. “I wanted to see his energy level, and it looks good. He looked good today.”
Michael E. Pegram owned 2-year-old Kentucky Bred son of Lawyer Ron, out of mare Cat Dancer by Storm Cat, Drill will be racing wearing blinkers this time around, that is the solution Baffert is coming for after Drill’s uncharacteristic 10th place
finish in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Churchill Downs on 5 November, 2011, to winner Hansen.
The agile colt broke his maiden in his second attempt at Del Mar over at six and a half furlongs on 13 August, 2011, on a dirt track under jockey R Bejarano.
He covered the distance in 1 minute and 16.56 seconds, defeating the likes of Seal the Deal and Spit Ball.
He then went on to land the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity Stakes At Del Mar over at seven furlongs, defeating Creative Cause and Majestic City in the process covering the distance in 1 minute and 22.16 seconds.
Drill was sent to run over a stretched out distance of 1 1/16 miles in the Norfolk Stakes next up at Santa Anita Park where he ran a pretty good race to finish second to winner Creative Cause.
Drill would have to tackle a formidable lineup yet again in the Delta Downs Jackpot, with the likes of No Spin and another Bob Baffert hopeful So Brilliant.
