How do I find an empty space inside the wall to drill into from under my house? I am planning on running some internet cables through, but I have no idea how to find the correct places to drill.

  1. I have had to do that on occasion and it is easy. If the room has carpet just take some long decking screws and s***w through the carpet near the wall to measure to underneath. Obviously use smaller diameter screws. You could use nails but I use screws to have more control. This will not harm or mark the carpet in any way. If you have other floorings pull off a piece of trim and send down a s***w where the hole will be covered up. No trim? Drill a tiny hole in the flooring and measure to the drill bit. Caulk to match. Hope this helps.

  2. At  HD or Lowe's' there is a tool called a "Divers bit" it is a long, flexible shaft drill bit designed to do what you intend.  Start where you want the outlet, cut the hole and drill down through the floor plate, then fish the wires up with the drill bit. It has  a small hole in the end to attach the wire.  This way you are in the wall where you want to be.

  3. I can't tell you how to find wires in the wall specifically, but to find the wall under the house, take a small nail and drive it into the floor from above, just inside the wall where you want to run the wires, make it big enough for a wire hangar wire to go through.  Straighten the hangar out and stick it down into the hole, you should be able to go underneath and find the wire, you may need to have someone above wiggle it a bit so you can find it.  The light shining through would also show you if you turn the lights off underneath.  the wall will be just outside of the wire or hole.  Be very careful, you could drill into a wire or pipe under the floor.

  4. Use a measuring tape. Measure from the outside of a  window to the inside wall. Then measure from outside wall to inside wall underneath.

      I  I  <------from here----....................... I  I <----to here

      I  I

      I  I ........................................... window

      I  I

      I  I  inside wall              outside wall   I  I

      I  I                                                   I  I

Plus !!! add 1/2 the wall thickness. If its a standard 2x4 stud wall with 1/2 inch sheet rock on each side- then the wall is 4 1/2 inches thick. So add 2 1/4 inches to your measurement, that should be the center of the wall.

If the wall is on top of a floor joist...it may be tough to hit.

SORRY....cant get my drawing to work right...maybe you can see it.
