Question:

Drilling deeper holes?

I am trying to put up curtain poles in bedroom, and a blind in the bathroom.

I have tried to drill a hole in the wall with a masonary drill bit, but it only goes in about 1/2 inch. The walls are brick, and above the window I beleive there is a strenthener.

I would love to be able to do this, as I have just moved into my own house, and always had a ex to do the DIY jobs. Want to do them myself, have all the rawplugs, so how do I get a deeper whole.

  1. you dont, the lintel above your window is steel, so you will have to go a bit higher till you miss it!.

  2. hammer drill required as you are drilling into a concrete lintel also try a small drill first as a pilot hole sometimes makes it easier if you have no hammer action on the drill

  3. try drilling up or down from the hole you have already done. you are probably hitting the steel inside the lintel.

  4. Drilling holes is only one way to fix things on walls.

You can now get a glue called NO NAILS.

This is something I have used with much success.

Buy the proper stuff, not cheap from a pound shop.

Glue a baton to the wall, and fix the pole to that.

The baton can be a lenghth of skirting board

  5. If you've hit the RSJ you'll need a drill bit for steel and turn the hammer action off.

  6. seems a bit strange that you can only drill to a depth of 1/2 an inch.are you hitting the strengthener as you call it? if its a concrete lintel you should still be able to drill into it although i wouldn't advise it.move up or down a little to avoid it and drill into the brick

  7. you need a hammer drill or if that doesnt touch it rent a pneumatic drill well worth it in the end

  8. My first question is rather an obvious one so my apologies in advance, are you using a 'hammer drill?', because this is what you need.

You are right about the 'strengthener', above each door and window there is a concrete lintel (it's very unlike;y to be steel over a window), which has the same dimensions (except it's length) as a brick, so if you are having troubles drilling into a concrete lintel, just try going up the thickness of a brick, 4 inches.
