Drills for beginners in volleyball
Volleyball is a sport that requires a player to have some essential skills. If one gets to describe the sport, it may sound easy to play but when one actually gets on the court to make a hit that is when a person realizes that it is not that easy. Like with
any other sport, a player cannot by successful in volleyball if the skill set is not learned and practised vigorously because there are always others out there who are working to improve their skills.
Therefore, if someone wants to take up volleyball as a sport or has a passion towards playing it, the basic skill development is the first step that should be taken. If you are new to the sport of volleyball and are looking towards developing your skills
there are a number of things that you can do to get you started on a fulfilling journey to become a good volleyball player.
The following quote by Misty May-Treanor explains the importance of skill development for playing good volleyball, “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication just like any pro sport. Especially for beach volleyball you don’t have to be tall or as fast as
other sports. You just have to have the skills.”
Another quote by Kerri Walsh explains why it is important for players to be good at volleyball skills, “You touch every other ball and, if you s***w up, you only have one more person to back you up. You can’t go hide in the corner.”
The basic skills that any volleyball player should have include serving, passing, receiving, blocking and hitting. There are more specialized skills such as setting and spiking as well but those come after the basic skills have been mastered.
The first thing that any new volleyball player should focus on is to learn how to toss and pass. For this purpose, the Toss and Pass drill can be practised. In order to carry out this drill, two players are required. At the start of the drill, one player
is to toss the ball to the player standing opposite who should then pass the ball back at the first player. This drill should go on for a certain number of repetitions after which both the players should switch roles so that the person first passing the ball
now does the tossing.
A very useful and easy to practice drill for beginners in volleyball is called the Wall Hitting drill. As the name implies, in order to execute this drill a wall is required as well as a ball. The benefit of this drill for beginners is that it can be practiced
without any partner so a person can do it individually at will. The way to go about this drill is to mark a spot on the wall that you would be aiming for. Once the spot is decided, the player should always aim to hit that spot no matter what angle the ball
is coming at him or her. By practising this drill, a player gains more control of the ball and also is able to practice the arm swing motion.
A variation of this drill is the Wall Block in which the player stands in front of the wall in a blocking position and then jumps as high as he or she can. When the player lands back onto the ground, he or she should do so in a landing position.
These are some of the drills that new volleyball players can practice in order to improve their basic volleyball skills.
