Drills to improve setting in volleyball
It is not enough to learn the rules of volleyball and get on the court to make the hit. The game is not just about getting the ball over the net. Through the years, volleyball has evolved to inculcate various specialized skills and techniques for improving
performance and being the better team on the court. As professional teams across the world are constantly practising and enhancing their skills, it has become imperative for a person who wants to take up volleyball professionally to develop these skills and
practice them repeatedly in order to be competitive.
If a person wants to play volleyball, there are certain basic skills that need to be mastered. However, if a player sees himself or herself in a specific role on the volleyball team, such as a libero, spiker or setter, then extra attention needs to be given
to these areas during practice sessions. There are various techniques that can be practised during training sessions in order to improve a certain skill set.
If a player wants to become a good setter, he or she must adopt the necessary character traits along with the right techniques to succeed.
The following quote about setting by Lindsey Berg explains the characteristics of a good setter, “Be a leader. A setter should be high energy. It's important that you learn how to give positive, constructive criticism. It's crucial that you make your teammates
feel comfortable. You should never be the most silent player in the gym.”
Apart from that, the following drills will go a long way if a player wants to become a good setter.
The first drill is called Set to Box. In this drill, a player stands on top of a box which is placed near the net and raises both the hands high up in the air. The place where the player’s hands are signifies the area in which a spiker would want to make
the hit. When the drill starts, the setter should set the ball where the hands of the player on the box are placed. The setter should be made to set the ball at the same point for at least 10 times so that he or she develops a flow and is able to evaluate
his or her sets.
Another important drill for a setter is the Blocker Movement Setting Drill. This drill enables a setter to adjust the set according to the position of the opposition’s blocker. At the start of the drill, one player should be standing on one side of the court
to act as the blocker while the tosser as well as the setter should be on the other side. The ball should be tossed to the setter from the back end of the court but before it reaches the setter, the blocker should move towards the right or the left of the
court. When the ball makes contact with the setter, he or she should set the ball in the opposite direction to which the blocker has moved. The drill should be repeated several times in order to ingrain the skill of setting the ball at the place where there
is no blocker.
If a setter develops these skills by practising them in every training session, not only will his or her own personal performance improve but the attacking ability of the team will also see significant improvement which will increase the chances of the team
to win matches.
