Question:

Drink driving in Greece, Mykonos and Ios?

Heading to Greece on Friday. I have been before but honestly never thought about it and I wasn't going with two mates I haven't seen in two years.

Obviously I won't be driving when I am out of control but does anyone know if they are as strict over there as they say would be in Australia? I don't want to spend a few nights in jail becuase I had one drink to many at a beach party. And considering some of the beaches are quite a drive away its something I have been wondering about.

Surely there must be thousands of drink drivers there this time of year??? lol And from what I have herd they tend to be a little relaxed in that respect in Greece.

  1. DON'T DRINK AND DRIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Depends where you are - but my friend is a nurse and sees the horrors of drink driving every weekend in Preveza - I can think of 10 people who have been killed in the past 5 yrs. A couple leaving small children (who survived). Why would you risk your life and others - taxis!

  3. Don't drink and drive, not only is it against the law but dangerous.  Greece has some very narrow winding roads that at times snake up cliffs, especially on the islands, they can be difficult to drive when sober never mind drunk. Driving under the influence depends on how you score on the breathalyser and can be from 200 to 1200 euros AND you can loose your license for 10 days to 6 months. The Greek police do use road-blocks to administer breathalyser tests.

FYI: those little crosses that you will end up seeing on the side of roads mark people who died in car accidents. Don't be foolish. Go have fun but play it safe.

  4. Just a piece of advice, avoid drink driving. It´s against the law! Your vacation could end up in a disaster if driving drunk!

Have fun and a nice vacation to you! (Without drunk driving for your own sake.)

  5. Greece is strict so be careful.  My friend was taking me to the airport in Athens at 3:00am and he got pulled over and he did not drink.

  6. Lately, I can assure you, they are very strict concerning driving after having consumed alcohol. The limits are now set extremely low (i.e. 1-2 drinks) and the tickets are really expensive (if you are lucky not to end up in front of the judge).

In addition, due to the fact that the roads especially in Mykonos going to Super Paradise and Cavo Paradiso (where I suppose you want to go) are really crappy, I suggest you being responsible of yourself, nomatter whether policemen appear in front of you or not.

Also, take under consideration that you might be asked to take an alco-test during the day too.

Despite that, I am sure you will have a great time over there!Have fun!

  7. Apart from any legal limitations and the dangers mentioned by everyone before me, note that the roads are a mess almost everywhere (this is a Greek driver speaking). Don't trust anybody driving in them, neither yourself or the other drivers.
