Question:

Drinking Green Tea?

Hello there!

I was just reading about the fascinating side-effects of drinking tea, and, I think I want to drink some myself for the healthyness of it. But, I need some advice. I can only go as far as Wal-Mart really and not some specialty shop [maybe there is one in town, I'll look later]. Is there any brands of tea that you recommend? I hear green tea is the absolute best, so, I may want that. I have always thought negatively of tea since the only time I had some was back in fourth grade and I nearly puked, however, it was packaged and "straight up" *does adding sugar and/or honey/lemon lessen the positive side effects? please answer this one*. Is there any brands I should try that you personally recommend? Is tea even at Wal-Mart or Marketplace? [I can go to either/or, both are right next to each other.]

Thanks!

  3. Hi NeciFiX,

Yes, Tea is very good for healthy. We found it 5000 years ago. I'm a Chinese tea lovers, we drink tea every day.

Tea is not just healthy, it's also very delicious. There are seven basic kind of tea, Black tea,Oolong tea,Green tea, White tea, Yellow tea, Pu-erh tea and re-process tea.

Any brand you should try? Sure, Long Jing(green tea), Ti Kuan Yin(Oolong tea), you'll like it.

Normally the tea saled in supermarket are all low-grade tea, if you want try good quality tea, you can go to tea house or buy it from internet.

    Any questions,you could contact me.

  4. You do not need to go to a specialty shop to get green tea. Everybody has it now. Super markets, grocery stores, convience stores.

As far as the best there really is not one. Everything out there realy is just based on preference. Tastes vary so some will like one and others won't. Some people even prefer certain companies over the product. Actually I would think that as far as the best for health goes it would be the new green tea ginger ale. Since ginger is also really good for us the combination is great for us and great tasting too. I am surprised that it only came out this year and not several years ago.

  5. You can get lipton green tea bags at wal-mart.  our tea section is right by the coffee.  adding sugar doesnt lessen the benefits, just adds calories is all.  I am from the south so I'm a big sweet tea drinker, hated unsweet....but when I switched to green tea, it took me a little while to adjust to it, so I would sweeten it and every pot I made would have a little less sugar until I wasn't adding any anymore. now I brew a pot and pop it in the fridge till it cools down and drink away!

  6. i drink arizona green tea all the time it is delicous it is a 100% real green tea but i dont really think its the best its delicous but not the best for u, i think u should visit a near by trader joes or other store like that that sells fresh organic goods and ask a cashie their for the best type of green tea, but if u cant do that id go with arizona or sobe green tea. NO LIPTON lipton tastes terrible.

  7. Any brand from the Grocery store is typically a poorer quality.

(all of the dust from the bottom of the bins after the good tea has been removed then its further broken up so that it brews QUICKLY)

If you are a newbie to green tea, I suggest picking a flavoured green tea, or a flavoured white tea, as they are typically teas that are more palatable to new tea drinkers.

Most importantly to brew a good cup of green tea that doesn't make you want to puke is to make sure that its brewed properly

You need to use water that is JUST below the boiling point and steep your tea for 30 seconds to 3 minutes depending on how strong you like it. Because you've expressed your near vomiting experience I'd reccomend starting at just 1 minute brewing time for your first few cups until you become more accustomed to the flavour.

As per adding honey or lemon to the drink, you can do that though tea afficianatos don't believe in adulturating their tea in this way, however in North American culture I do believe its totally acceptable, and doesn't negate the health benefits of the tea, however it does increase the caloric intake.

You might also want to look into ROOIBOS tea, though its not a true "Tea"  its something that alot of people really enjoy.

Rooibos provides a wealth of nutrients and antioxidants. It is mineral rich, offering iron, potassium, calcium, copper, zinc, magnesium, and manganese as well as vitamin C.  The antioxidant potency of rooibos rivals that of revered green tea. Many of these compounds have anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties and rooibos is caffiene free. Rooibos has a natural sweet taste, can be enjoyed hot or cold in water or juice, and tastes great with or without milk, lemon, or honey. It can be used as a base for punch, soups, stews, marinades, or sauces – adding color and flavor along with its other benefits. It can also replace liquids in recipes (great in cake mixes!)  and work as a meat tenderizer. Rooibos does not deteriorate in taste or appearance when refrigerated or reheated. Rooibos tea steeped for 30 minutes at a temperature just below boiling has 50% more antioxidant capacity than do leaves steeped for only 5 minutes. If you steep tea this long, double the amount of water to make about one cup of tea.61 cup filtered water 1 rooibos tea bag, or 1 teaspoon loose rooibos .

One more tip of advice, you're always better off spending more money then $1.00 on your tea, so don't go off to the dollar store, and wonder why you don't like your tea, its typically very poor quality and VERY old.

Tea will deteriorate with age. Ideal storage conditions are said to be 20 deg C with a relative humidity of 35%- at which the tea will not dry out or absorb moisture. These conditions are rarely met. Even if teas were stored under ideal conditions there is a very slow process that continues, called post oxidative reaction, that is, the tea continues to ferment. As stated, it is a very, very, slow process but if stored for a couple of years, where it can access air, it will change in taste.

a better tea will start at atleast $5.00 for 50g loose leaf. and usually from a repuitable tea house. If you must buy bags, try to get the new pyramid style bags as the quality of tea within is much higher quality.

    Mighty Leaf Tea

    Numi Tea

or Two Leaves and A Bud http://www.worldpantry.com/cgi-bin/ncomm...

are supposed to be great brands for bagged tea.

I have to admit, i haven't tried or even looked at the loose leaf varieties of tetley, though I'd assume it has to be slightly better then what they have in the bags.

To comment on the above poster Long Jing (aslo know as Lung Ching and Dragonwell is the most popular green tea in China )(green tea), Ti Kuan Yin(also known as Ti Guan Yin and as Iron Goddess of Mercy)(Oolong tea),  are both varieties of tea, and not however brands.
