Question:

Drinking Plastic Bottled Water Left in Car?

I usually have a drink of bottled water with me almost at all times. When I don't finish it, I leave it in the car and return to it a few hours later. The bottled water is hot and open and wonder if its okay for me to drink....

PLUS!!

I have a 24 bottled water pack in the trunk of my car so I can drink water whenever I want...is this still just as bad? The only difference in this situation is that the bottles aren't opened....

  1. I was told, just yesterday, that bottled water left in the car, that heats up, absorbs the plastic residue from the bottles. I don't know how true this is but I would contact someone who makes this  bottled water for the bottom line answer.

  2. it depends on how long it was in the car .

  3. Hot water in a plastic bottle isn't really bad, but really nasty tasting. The heat penatrates into the bottle, warming the water and leaving a nasty taste-the plastic-especially when it is left open for flying dust particles that you can't see, so my best bet is to not drink any water from a bottle-plastic-especially when left open.

  4. It’s probably not as safe as you would think.  Although much has made of the real sources for bottles water such as Aquafina, in general, bottled water does not contain any materials like chlorine that can inhibit bacterial growth.   Don’t forget that every time you drink, there is some backwash, or water that comes in contact with your mouth but doesn’t necessarily enter it.  (If you doubt this, the next time you drink from a glass while eating greasy foods, you might notice that there appears to be trace amounts of grease floating in your beverage after some time).  The backwash can contain bacteria that are now in the bottle.  Bacteria can also come from other sources as well.  The lack of protective additives in water as well as the high temperatures can make for rapid bacterial growth.

Although the chances that you will actually become sick from this are relatively slight, there is not hard evidence to suggest that it is entirely safe.  In short, avoid leaving non-chlorinated bottled water to get warm.  This goes for all situations, regardless of how hot the temperature is.  If your water starts getting warmer, spill it out and either get a fresh bottle or find some tap water.

The unopened bottles in your car are still safe and fine for the time being, but leaving them alone in the trunk for too long can negatively affect the taste over time.  It will not affect safety in any major way though.

  5. Drinking bottled water isn't the best thing do to heated or non-heated.  I usually drink tap water, I hear its safer!

  7. I've done this many times and am still alive and healthy.  Judge for yourself.
