I saw that some college presidents and such want to lower the drinking age to 18, to decrease binge drinking of college students. You think the law will get passed?

  1. its pretty bizzare that a legal adult cant legally drink in the US! I mean 18 is legal where im from and I was a responsible drinker at 17! ..why do yanks think its ok to have guns but not drink:P

  2. The Age to drink here in Ireland is 18 and its good. If you can vote, go to war, go to prison, own and drive a car and have in your possession a deadly weapon like a gun, then they should not be able to tell you what to do. Thats just my opinion, America is still a young country though so any changes seem radical, anyway thats all I have to say.

( also; in Northern Ireland (Britain) you can smoke cigerettes at the age of 16. So its not like lowering smoking and drinking ages will destroy a country or anything, its just an adjustment)

  3. I'll drink regardless, the only thing that law does is make me a criminal for doing it.  Lowering the drinking age would take away alot of the stigma for alcohol, and it would actually give a reason to wait a year or two.  Who actually waits till 21?? If teens are gonna get drink they're gonna do it way before they turn 21.

  4. I lived on Grand Cayman and the drinking age is 18. I agree with the stupidity that you can go to war and die, but you can't have a beer or a glass of wine at dinner. People are going to drink and drive whether they're of legal age or not. If they were able to get it easier, maybe it won't be as appealing to them.

  5. no 21.

  6. http://chooseresponsibility.org is working towards just that...and it isn't just them. Several states are currently doing studies to determine if the 1984 Minimum Drinking Age Act has been a failure or not. (Hint: It has been.)

Will it pass or not? I doubt it will pass anytime soon nationwide at least. Contrary to popular belief drinking ages are set by the states themselves and not the federal government. MAYBE...one or two might. But I doubt it. We live in a country were the few (abstinence grounds) wield far to much power.

  7. It won't go through.  There are too many other reasons why people under the age of 21 shouldn't drink.

I think that the colleges that are promoting this are trying to pass the buck on a major problem.  They can't control what happens on their own campuses.

Besides, how many high school students are 18?  It would cause major problems.

  8. Quite possible what next at age 16 you can smoke?

  9. The US Government will take 10% of highway funds for lowerring  the state laws for alcohol down to 18. But studies show the state can recover this through the sales and sales tax of the alcohol.

I say lower it to 18 and raise the auto driving license to 18 or 20.

  10. It will never happen.

  11. The real reason is liability. If some underage "A"hole gets injured, or injures someone else, his parents will sue the school. If the 18 year old is now "legal", he is responsible for his own actions.

Can anybody tell me how changing the drinking age will reduce binge drinking ?

  12. They did this 7 years ago In louisiana and the federal government went  after the state by removing all federal Highway funding and slashing public works funding. ti was such a mess the state immediately overturned the law and raised it to 21.  there was a grandfather clause that  allowed any one who turned 18 in those couple days to get a special permit to drink legally. pretty cool huh

  13. Yes. And it goes to show how weak we are. Because so many people are breaking they law we might as well change the law mentality is going to drive us into the ground. Now I'm okay with changing this law to 18 but my problem comes with the next law they start to look at. Well the drinking age has been lowered we might wanna start discussing marijuana as well. Since so many people do that lets legalize that. Oh and illegal immagration lets grant amnisty too. Thy need to stick to their guns and start enforcing these laws thats what our taxes go to. Create the safe America thats promised to us and stop worrying about what the kids will think. Raise your d**n kids better and let the lawmakers worry about something thats a bit more important.

  14. I sure hope not... 18 year olds have enough trouble driving without causing accidents as it is. I would rather not see them now be allowed to drive to and from bars legally. The reason for the law may be to give younger people more responsibility and treat them more like adults but the reality is they aren't mature enough yet to handle the responsibility of diving and drinking - it will cause way too many deaths.
