Ok So my baby girl is nearly 3 months old and I would love to have my first evening out. She is exclusively breast feed and I would like to drink on my night out. If I express milk before how much will I need, Ie how many mls does a 3 month old baby drink at one time. Also Do I have to express all of the milk out of my b*****s the next day and throw it away before feeding her again to make sure there is no alcohol in my breast milk?

use this chart given to me by my doctor.  it has all the information you need.

as for how much to feed the baby. it's always tricky with breastfeeding.  the amount varies at each feeding.  practice with her...try giving her 4 oz. see if she needs more, if she does then make 5 oz bottles of breast milk, for example.

enjoy your night out, but remember to pump well before hand and keep a stash in your freezer so you are not stuck pumping a couple hours before you head out the door.  do it a few days in advance. good luck!

oh ya, and you don't really need to pump and dump.  just take your pump with you, if its portable to do so, and pump if your b***s get too full or hard or you start to leak.  you could hand express if you know how, i never did, so i took a pump just in case. i never really used it though.  and most importantly: wear breast pads!!!!!!

  2. for every drink add two hours no nursing.

you have 2 drinks dont nurse your baby for at least 4 hours after the last drink is gone.

As far as pumping I would maybe pump a couple of times that day and maybe the day before so you have enough Just in case you need it.

    Have fun you deserve it!!

  3. Here is a GREAT article about it.

It says 2-3 drinks are fine to have. You should avoid breastfeeding for 2-3 hours after drinking and there is no need to pump and dump as alcohol leaves the milk as it leaves the blood.

Here is a chart of how much expressed breastmilk you will probably need for your baby while you are gone. You should probably give her expressed milk for the 2am feed unless you have stopped drinking by 11pm. This calculator will tell you how much you should pump.

If you have never given her a bottle before you should try it a few times before that night to make sure she will take it. Have someone else give it to her though because if she smells you she may refuse the bottle and want the breast.

Have fun on your night out!

  4. BC is right about the pumping and dumping.  You don't need to do it.  Once alcohol is metabolized out of your blood you're ready to nurse.  So if you wake up the next morning and still feel "buzzed" don't nurse.  Wait until you feel completely comfortable doing it.  And since you'll get so full in the meantime...you CAN pump.

As for how much to pump to have enough for your daughter?  3 month olds consume about 24-36 ozs in a 24 hour period.  So I'd have about that much on hand just in case.

  5. The "pump and dump" myth was busted long ago. If it's not in your blood, it's not in your breast. So, what is the formula for blood alcohol level? Take away one drink per hour or something?

  6. As a mom of 2 kiddos who were and currently only breast fed you do not have to worry about one or two drinks. Enjoy yourself and don't pump and dump. That has been proven to be a myth. Just make sure that you pump enough for your baby, between 10 to 12 oz. a least the day before you go out. That way you don't have to worry about being back in time to feed your baby at a certain time and the baby sitter has enough for at least 2 feedings for you baby! Each baby is different, usually between 4 to 6 oz is about right,  but if you have the baby sitter offer at least 5 oz. at first then at least you'll have some peace of mind. Enjoy your evening out.
