Question:

Drive by shootings in my neighborhood

Last night, just before we were going to bed, there was a drive by shooting at the house diagonally from my house. I didn't realize it was a shooting last night. I heard two bangs from where I was in the house. My husband was the one who realized what was going on, but he didnt' say anything to me until this morning. Now I'm really scared because we have small children, and if the shooters were traveling north, then the people at the house shooting back would be shooting directly at our house! We have large windows in the front of our house.

What should I do? We can't afford to move, but I am really scared for the safety of my family.

  1. you can ask the police to patrol the area more frequently but unfortunately a bullet doesnt have a name on it. maybe you can position your room differently so that youre not in the path of the window and getting an alarm system isnt a bad idea either...good luck=]

  2. Maybe put a brick front on your house if you can afford that. Otherwise buy a gun and shoot back.

  3. If moving's not an option, you have to decide how big a threat this is likely to be and how far you are prepared to go. I have known people to harden the front of the house, replacing a wooden door with steel and steel shutters for windows. When heavier weapons are expected, like assault rifles, it's really hard to deal with that effectively. If it's practical to position cars on the street in front, it's at least something. If you can talk to the people across the street, it might ease your mind. It may be that they have no intention of shooting back or at least will be more aware that your house is in the background. If you don't have much lighting in front, you could add some. That will at least make people more aware that there's a home in the line of fire.

  4. if you really want to report it go down to the local police station and give a report of what happened. it would help to have you hubby there since he is the one who witnessed the event and you sorta missed it. it would have been good to have more info like the kind of car, perhaps a description of the shooters, license plate #, the time it happened, etc. without that there is not a lot they can do but it will be file opened but i doubt anything else would come of it. i do feel for you i know how scared you must be.
