I'm planning a road trip from Colorado Springs to Puebla, Mexico in March and I'm wondering if anyone's ever done this (not necessarily from Colorado Springs). I'm planning to enter Mexico in Laredo, Texas and according map24.com, the whole trip should take about 28 hours. Is this realistic?

  1. I lived in Colorado Springs until  a little over 2 yrs. ago when I moved to Mexico.  I now live in the state of Veracruz, 2 hrs east of Puebla.  Yes, about 28 hrs sounds right.  I like to use the map site at the 1st link below.  You  will need to get a Guia RoJi too...the Mexican road atlas.  You can order it from Amazon.com.  You will also need to get a car permit.  You can get it in Nuevo Laredo, but it is a real pain to find that car permit office there and can take hrs. in the office.  Better to get it at the Mexican consulate office in Denver.  You cannot drive past the 12 mile checkpoint without the permit.  You must have your license, registration, and TITLE to show to get the permit.  If your car is financed, you mst get a letter from them on company letterhead stating you have their permission to take the car to Mexico.  You must also have a credit card for them to make a record of.  If you were to try to  leave Mexico without your car, you would be finded $400.00 as it is illegal to sell an American car in Mexico.  You will need mexican car insurance too.   See 2nd website for my favorite place and 3rd website for permit info.  Then, I presume you know Mexican highways can vary from wonderful to horrid.  Also, NEVER drive at nite...due to animals on the road and bad spots or holes in the road.  Leave your "hurry-up" American way of doing things at home and EXPECT delays or unexpected things to happen.  SMILE at the border guards and at the soldiers at the military checkpoints.  shake hands, thank them for their great work, never act the least bit in a hurry or bothered if your car is chosen to be checked.  They have to check so many cars a day...has nothing to do with you specifically.  I am a single American woman,  and have never had any trouble driving in Mexico.    Email me if I can help you in any other way.  Hope you have a great trip.
