Question:

Driver's license in 2 months, not ready, stick shift?

Ok. I get my license in 2 months and I don't really feel ready. I have no problem driving when I'm alone in a car (yes I've driven by myself), but when I drive with my mom she always tells me how bad I am and how I'm never going to get my license. Needless to say this freaks me out and makes me incredibly nervous, but she won't take me to get my license until I can drive calmly with her.

I really need tips being calm with my mom and advice for the driver's test.

  1. When you ride with your mom and SHE is driving, critcize her the same way she does you. (be ready to duck)  She will tell you to shut up.    Indicate to her that is what she is doing to you.SAY:   "Either sit in the car mom, and tell me WHEN I do something wrong IF I do something wrong, but otherwise, keep your opinions to yourself."

The examiner will not be yapping the way your mom is.  Not unless you run a stop sign or a red light.   They are very quiet.  They tell you to drive down the road and make a left at the next intersection.  You do so using signals the proper way and all that jazz. and they just observe.  He will ask you to backup.  To parallel park and watch how you do it.   They are quiet.

The stick may feel awkward(dropping the clutch correctly more than anything else.)  Practice stopping/starting on hills without rolling backward.   Know how to cross railroad crossings correctly and all the other stuff in the book and you got it done.      One day, bam, it just comes to you in your sleep.

So long as you know the rules of the road, you will be fine.

  2. Find a cool friend who will let you drive with her/him. Sound's like your mom isn't helping at all. I would never say those kind of things to someone who is trying to improve

  3. You are driving a stick shift? Wow,props.

I would suggest getting an adult that is more calm in the car and not so negative.Perhaps get a driving instructor for a few lessons?

  4. Just to let you know, some lucky people learnt driving basics through from auto transmission, before they proceed to learning manual transmission. One you're familiar with the accelerator and the brake, now you add in the clutch pedal. It takes time, but sooner or later you'll be able to get a style to suite your method. I still remember taking my driving test last time. Nearly failed for speeding (until today, I'm still a speed freak). Today, I'm learning stuffs that mechanics are famed for - narrow-lane speeding, Reverse drifting and Over-revving vehicles to find out if a vehicle has turbo-boost or not.

  5. practice practice practice, youre going to stall alot at first, but it gets easier/
