Question:

Driver's nicknames?

"fireball", "the intimidator", "jaws", "the silver fox", and "the king" are just a few of the great nicknames nascar drivers have earned and worn with pride (or shame) over the years.

which driver's nickname (past or present) fits his personality the best, and why?

my choice is obvious:

"rowdy" busch - because he is the definition of "rowdy" on the track. and because he, his fans, and his haters are all as rowdy as they come...

if you need any help, here's a list of nascar nicknames: http://drinkthis.typepad.com/answer_this/nascar_nicknames/index.html

your turn...

  1. "The Intimidator" Dale Sr

"Wonderboy " Jeff (given to him by Sr)

    "Rowdy" seems to fit Kyle

    "Rubberhead"Kurt (also given by Sr.)

  2. I pretty much like all of those names, but my fave is Junebug. It's  different and his dad gave it to him.

I think the best sounding one is Fireball Roberts, but the fact that he died as a result of a fire on the race track kinda takes away from it.  Kinda sad.

  3. Kyle Busch -- I prefer "Shrub" to "Rowdy," because it's a funny play on his last name, he's Kurt's younger brother, AND he has some growing to do. Rowdy was something he named himself. I think nicknames ought to be given by others. Giving yourself one is pretty lame.

Tony Stewart -- "Smoke" fits that temper and personality of his. He's like a volcano. There's always smoke coming out of his ears.

I read that list, and just out of curiosity, why is Elliott Sadler called "Candyman?" Is it something left over from his M&Ms days?

  4. Sterling Marlin's dad was known as "Coo Coo" Marlin. "Jaws" for D.W. was good (came from Cale Yarborough), "Rushville Rocket" is good for Tony Stewart, paying homage to his hometown.

an obscure one is "Beak" for David Reutimann. He got it in high school for his big nose.

  5. I've got to go with the Earnhardt's...Ralph "The Ironheart"  (cause he never showed much emotion)... Dale "the intimidator" (well that one goes without needing a reason LOL you just didn't want him in your rearveiw mirror!!)... and Jr " little E" or "Junebug" ( just because)also some good ones are Tony Stewart "smoke" ( for smoking up the track and the competition)Jeff Gordon "the kid"(was a good nickname for him when he was a rookie) and Terry Labonte "Iceman"(I don't know why I just like this one=)!!!

    good question!!

  6. In drag racing days you had the Snake (Don Prudhomme) and the Mongosse,(Tom McEwen) and the Zookeeper (John Mulligan) ruling the roost til he got killed in Amarillo in an engine explosion and fire at the line that led to all of the safety equipment trailing around the NHRA you see today.

Of course on the subject of dragsters the all time king was the Swamp Rat. Mulligans explosion led to the back engined digger.

Edit Sorry I assumed everyone knew I was there for a lot of of it so its living memory to me, but who the Swamp Rat was.-Don Garlits

    The Ironman- Ricky Rudd

  16. I like Junebug, Little E.

  17. "Instigator" for Earnhardt. My friends and I called him that for years, you could usually count on him instigating a spin or caution late in a race.

Of current drivers, "Wild Thing" is tops.

  18. Tony "I ate Subway" Stewart

  19. My favorite couldn't be anything other than the Intimidator.

Sr. was my favorite driver since I was knee high to a grasshopper, and name fit him to a "T".

Honorable mention goes to Robert "Bootie" Barker, because we all like Booty!

Also, The dark complected Danny "Chocolate" Myers, and Michael "Fatback" Mcswain! Those just have a nice ring to them.

  20. Wreckin' Robby Gordon - Doesn't seem to finish many races. Doesn't seem to bother him much either.

  25. My favorite all time nickname is "Fatback", Rudds long time crew chief.

  26. My personal Favorite:

    Kyle "The Pile" Busch
