Driver's permit expired one year ago.. what to do?

well, the title basically describes my little (kind of) predicament. i got my permit in june of 2006, it expired june 2007... and now its august 2008. ive been away from home for a while and i just permanently returned, and it so happens that i need my driver's license ASAP. how do i go about renewing my permit and how long will i have to wait before i can take the driving test/get my license? i live in california, and i don't know much about the DMV's policies on driving in terms of my situation. if anyone knows, it would be quite helpful. thanks

You need to renew your temps and go to drivers ed classes. After you have completed them, you need to take your drivers test. The whole process takes about 1 1/2- 2 months.

I heard you can go in and renew it by just paying a fee. But I'm not completely sure for the state of California. My friend has the same predicament he's permit expires soon but isn't sure he's ready for the drivers test.

Can you renew a drivers permit? Or must to take the written test again?

i do not live there so i do not know of the policies.  However I do know that you left out one big detail.  Did you even take driver's ed?

You cannot even get a provisional license unless you have.  Unless you are 18+ depending on when your b-day is then you can just take the road test and get your license though you wouldn't even need a permit, driver's ed, or provisional license all you'd need is someone to drive you to the DMV and take the road test.  Though I think you have to make an appointment to take the road test, not sure.

uhmmm, when my permit almost expired, i quickly aced the driving test so that i didnt have to spend 20 bucks to renew... but you cant do that nemore XD

i think its 8mo-1yr somewhere between before u can take the test?

I don't know about CA, but in AZ if you're 18 or older don't have to get a permit before you get your license. But it would REALLY help you (and drivers everywhere) if you knew how to drive!

You dont need to renew it, just prove that you have had it and then take the test and get your lisence
