Driver License renewal abroad?

I am living abroad and my Driver License is going to expire soon. I won't be visiting the US any time soon - is there a way I can renew it? I have already checked my states webpage and I can't do it online.

I would make a call to the Department of Motor Vehicles in the state you live.  (or to the Driver's Licence Department if one is listed).  This would be a great quesion for them to answer.  I suspect that the answer varies from state to state.

  If you cannot call, I would then suggest an email.  I prefer calling as you get a live person to talk to - emailing tends to have a no reply!
