I've been taught to ways when it comes to keeping your hands on the wheel...my moms boyfriend dan taught me to let the wheel slide through your hands after a turn while my boyfriends grandfather has taught me to cross my hands when straightening the wheel from a turn...does anyone know the correct way. I live in Pennsylvania and will be taking the test in Gettysburg on tuesday.

  1. i just let it slide usually, but that's just me

  2. go with the boyfriend..........been driving for 45 years

  3. Your grand dad hit the nail on the head.  You never let the steering wheel slip through you hands nor do you ever let go.  You place your hands at 11 and 2 position on wheel and when you finish , turn the wheel back into a straight driving position keeping your hands firmly on your wheel.

This will give you a more controlled turning experience.

  4. You should just let the wheel slide through your hands.  You don't have to cross your hands over on any of the newer cars, because they straighten themselves.  Older cars did not.

Look, I just took the test on Thursday, in Tennessee.  Contrary to all below answers, you are not totally taking your hands off the wheel.  You are maintaining contact as it slips through your hands.  And I passed with flying colors.

  5. I was taught by my dad and the drivers ed teacher at school let it go through your hands and NEVER cross them, But I live in alabama so it might be different.

  6. Letting the wheel slide through your hand, can cause you to loose control of the wheel..

But you also don't want to cross your arms, because if for some reason your airbag deployed, your hands would be thrown from the wheel.

Your hands should be at 11 and 2 or 3, whichever is comfortable and when you are straighten back up the wheel, move your hands, one at a time, to the correct position to turn the wheel back.  Remember One at a time, never take both hands off the wheel at the same time, BIG NO NO, taking a driving test.

Best suggestion, practice backing out of the driveway and turning back in with your Mom or Dad's car, this way you know which is more comfortable and easier for you to control, with removing which hand first.

    Good Luck on Tuesday!!!

  7. Its hand over hand for your information that way one hand is always on the steering wheel.

For hand positioning if you put both hands in middle of each side of the steering wheel and and go up one hand on each side that's where your hands should be.
