Question:

Drivers who go slow in the fast lane on purpose?

What is your response when a driver stays in the fast lane with plenty of opportunities of moving over into the slow lane but stays put? It seems that if you get too close they get indignant and then they won't move no matter what. Worst thing you can do is flash your lights at them... then they slow down.

  1. Okay, you caught us!   We're a syndicate of drivers whose sole purpose is to get in your way.  We have a phone tree, GPS trackers, whole nine yards.   Haven't you noticed it's always the same 20 guys?   :)

Seriously, it depends.  If I'm in an urban area (which is to say within 10 miles of any Starbucks) I think nothing of it.  It's just normal urban commuting, there's no such thing as lane discipline.  If it happens in far rural freeways, I honk, flash, wave em over, all that...  because lane discipline is actually expected out there.

  2. Here is the honest truth. There is no fast lane. There is only ONE speed limit!

  3. They're idiots.  If you don't like the way people drive, esp. if it's faster than you, FINE, drive in 1 of the other lanes... but I hate it when they act all self-righteous like they're trying to teach other fast drivers a lesson.  They're NOT helping the situation, & either p**s people off, distract the flow of traffic (esp. when people CAN'T pass them because they're being pricks), &/or could even be caught in a wreck themselves.  Bottom line - let the COPS teach people a lesson, that's what they're for.  It's not up to drivers to try to show others how it's done :-P  Actually, one of my 1st tickets I ever got, I was passing someone who was going slower in the fast lane, but then the cop somehow ended up pulling us both over!

  4. I'm sure there is more than one reason why drivers, drive slow in the fast lane~ I know it is very aggravating~ I think those drivers should get a ticket! Nevertheless, the only thing one can do is ~ get in the other lane & then pass the slow driver & then get in front of them~

  5. I think "audobon" rules should apply in most cases.  Keep right except to pass.

Where I live there are signs that even say this and yet drivers still insist on hanging in the left lane and refusing to move.  Maybe they think:  "Oh there's plenty of room to the right."

I agree with the answer about rural vs. urban.   All bets are off in the city and often there's really nothing the driver ahead can do - they either need that lane or there's someone in front of them.

But man, when it clears... I don't care if they're going 15 mph OVER the speed limit - if they get raced up on - move the EFF OVER!

I do.  It's called checking the rearview which is just plain common sense.

Now this lane blocking is about the same as the person that sees you coming but still pulls into the lane to pass a truck or something and then refuses to even go a little faster - 20 minutes later they consent to moving back to the right.

Oh, gee, thanks for the lesson.

Now I just practice "Zen" driving - racing around uses too much gas - it feels good to go slow - and it also feels good to get the heck out of the way and enjoy the ride without ticking someone off behind you.

  6. Well, I try to pass them in the "slow" lanes. Although technically this is illegal, everyone does it. Just don't make it too obvious that this is what you are doing, and you should be fine. As to the other person, if she's ever been on an interstate, she hasn't been the driver. The speed limit acts more as the speed minimum. Not even the cops go the speed limit on interstates. They only pull you over if you are going much faster than the rest of traffic.
