well.. i recently got my californian driver license.. i was just wondering if anyone can help answers some questions i have in mind..

1. if someone hits your car and run.. i would follow the person until i get his license plates? or do i have to follow the person til he stops what if i am incapble of getting of getting his license plate.. and he escapes free.. do i call the police or there's nothing i can do about it?

2 when is it necessary to call the police when youre in a collision? because ive seen people just exchange information without having the police involved.. or do you just call if someone is injured? or pose a threat

3. this question is similar to question 1.. when someone hits your car in a parking lot.. and the suspect flees.. whats the best thing to do?

sorry but i dont know.. ive never been in any of these situation and just wanted to be properly informed.. dont be mean thanks in advance

  1. 1. Call the police and tell them what happened, try and get the plate number and description of the vehicle and leave the rest to the police.

    2. Always call the police in an accident, if only information is exchanged the other party may turn around and report this to the police as a hit and run against you.

    3. Same as number 1.


  2. on the hit and run question, you are risking injury to pursue the other driver, if you are insured, which you must be in California, and have decent comp on your car, your damages will be covered, without knowing the identity of the fleeing driver,2. it is not necessary to notify police of an accident, unless there is an injury, in most cities or counties, in California but you must notify your insurance company within 24 hours, make sure you know what your insurance covers; just minimum liability ins,will not repair your car, you must have comp, for that, if someone is injured in your car, or the other, you shouldn't move the vehicles until a peace officer directs, my insurance provides us with a disposable camera to record the details of an accident
