Im 17 years old. I have my full drivers license (doubt that matters but). Would i be able to take a boat out by myself or no? I would need to get a safety certificate first right? However say i have a friend who is 18, as long as im under his 'supervision' im allowed to drive and operate the boat right?

My dads been saying im allowed to take his boat out by myself with some friends and go tubing and whatever this summer. He says i dont need to take a course first, but everything ive read says i do. But then if i have a friend whose 18 coming with us (who doesnt know anything about boats) i could basically drive on a technicality right? Ive been going with my dad for a few years now so i know how to do everything, but because id be with someone whose 18 itd be allowed? Sorry its just been confusing me. Thanks for any help

  1. Here's a link to the NYS boating regulations:

    http://nysparks.state.ny.us/boating/reso...

Pages 39-40 detail the age requirements.  If you are under 18 you must complete a safety course to operate a boat without adult supervision.  If under 18 without a course certificate you must be supervised by someone 18 or older.  How intersting that the 18 year old doesn't have to have ANY boating knowledge!  Kind of pointless, isn't it?
