Driving Lesson Help?

Today is my third day in driving lesson.

I still have problem stepping on the gas to accelerate very slowly. I always end up jerking in order to control speed. There is a fine pressure to keep it but i cannot do it most of the time. What im doing is to press clutch first before stepping gas and regulate the speed with clutch. My instructor told me to release the clutch fully.

My question is: In a crawling traffic jams, how do keep moving at almost constant and slow speed?

  1. the only way you will be able to do this is with practice just pay attention to what you are doing to cause the problem, then work at doing that part different. it will come together for you.

  2. there is no written way. as you release the clutch, slowly lower your foot onto the gas- you have to do it kind of simeltaneously. the more you release the clutch, the more you push on the accelerator, but not too hard! just use even pressure. if its too much, don't jump back, that doesn't help the jerking motion.

most of all, this takes practice. it might take a week or two for you to get the hang of it. take your time, and you will get it. hang in there.

  3. Once you feel that "tug" as you slowly release your clutch, hold it there for a second or two and slowly release your right foot from the brake pedal. This will allow your vehicle to begin moving forward........you always come off the clutch very slowly, and relase the brake as you feel that "tug". This is something to practice......Once your car is moving, then brake first a bit and depress the clutch, braking again to a full stop.......repeat this over and over again in a parking lot until you get the "feel" of that clutch.............once you get your vehicle in motion, you can then begin to shift gears.............when shifting it's basically............slowly off clutch, feel that tug, hold it there as you release the brake, gently (with your heel position back and using only your toes).........squeeze, don't push your toes onto the accelerator.

You can then use your tachometer (if you have one in your vehicle) or listen to the engine to determine when to shift up to the next gear (or shift down).......usually, you would shift up from first gear to second gear once your tachometer is at approximately 2,000 - 2,500 rpms. If you are entering a higher speed road, then you would shift at a higher rpm, but you will learn that as you absorb and put all of this knowledge into practice.

Driving a manual shift vehicle will also make you a better driver, because you are always looking for conditions under which you need to shift up and down.....makes a driver more aware of his/her environment and keeps them on task......

You will "jerk" the car forward at first, but eventually you will learn to smooth it out.........just practice starting and stopping........by the way, when moving slowly forward or backward and your vehicle is close to anything (garage doors, gas pumps, other vehicles), never let the clutch all the way out........in these cases you should "ride" the clutch....

  4. 1. leave it is either first or second gear and drive slow.

    2. leave it in first or second and put you left foot on the clutch and your right foot on the gas and release one or the other as needed, it takes practice....
