Question:

Driving Lessons - How many more ?

I currently have a Provissional UK driving licence and a theory test certificate. To upgrade my licence, I will obviously need to take a practical test.

I have already had 13 lessons (hourly) and have covered a variety of roads and roundabouts, also junctions and a regular dual carriageway. I have conducting a bay park, but no manoveurs atall, and certainly no reversing.

There is this one particular roundabout where My instructor usually takes hold of the wheel as my steering needs some working on slightly. I am still learning roundabouts.

The Question is :

How many more lessons will I need (hourly) before I can take the test. The guideline is 45, but I have heard people that have only taken 30, or as little as 10.

  1. OK I'm a little confused as you say you have not done any manoeuvres or reversing, but you have done a bay park? Well, the last time I taught someone to drive - a bay park was a monoeuvre and one where you have to reverse - even if you drive in forward!!

You say the "guideline" is 45? Where did you get this information from, as I have NEVER seen a "guideline" for how many driving hours you need!

If you would please follow the link below to the government's own website it clearly states:

"Those who pass their driving test have had, on average, about 45 hours of professional training combined with 22 hours of private practice"

This is not a guideline - this is just the result of a survey!

Yes people will have taken fewer and more lessons than the 45 hours everyone is obssessed with, and a lot of people (including people on here) will say how they passed after 2 hours with no previous driving experience!

Believe what you want to believe - you will be ready for your test when you're ready, and you're only ready when you can drive around and perform all manoeuvres WITHOUT anyone's help - verbal or physical.

    More haste and less speed.

  2. Hi there.

This is a large can of worms you have opened here, but I will try and explain, I am a driving instructor by the way.

I have a student who, after 6 lessons, can parralel park, do the turn in the road, and left reverse, is fantastic on the clutch and also a great driver, BUT will not look in the mirrors, or do any observations at all, I go over and over it, and still it goes on, so we all have weak points.

    So you are all different.

To drive straight is quite easy, try looking ahead as far as possible on the road you are driving on, your car will follow your hands and eyes.

if you are being caught out on one certain roundabout, it shows you are not ready to go further, if you are fighting with this r/bout, there are hundreds more of them with the same on and off exits, that would give you a problem if you passed your test now. its simply a matter of learning, and I will promise you this, one day you will get into the car and something in your head will tell you, I CAN DO THIS.

That is the day YOU will realise you can drive, and your instructor will know at the same time.

I f you think you should move on faster, have a word with your instructor and he will gladly let you have a go at reversing, but it would be pointless really, untill you get your steering right.

I f you have a car in the family that you can practice in, that will help in leaps and bounds, but you must be able to drive without a steering problem 1st, bear in mind the family car will not have dual controls fitted, and the person sat at the side of you, may not see what your instructor sees, and not be fast enough to take the wheel from you.

There is an insurance company that insures any car up to group 15 and it must not be worth over 20k. they insure it in your name only, and any claim will not affect the owners insurance at all, it is a policy in your name only for the car. contact me if you need the details, and the cost is £82.50 per month, then the second month is £62.50 for any car.

Work out the price of a lesson and you will see it is a good offer..NO I DO NOT WORK FOR THEM.

Talk to your instructor about your worries.

Do not try and rush this driving thing, for your health and everyone elses, take your time and enjoy it, the last thing your family wants is for you to be another statistic.

    Good luck, and drive safely.

  3. Are you fed up with taking driving lessons?

I am fed up with studying maths and not passing the ******* test!!! I have laready done 4 tests and the highest grade I've got is 4!!

    Work harder dude!

  4. took me over 30 lessons but i didn't have any driving time behind the wheel before that, and my instructor was a bit of sly moneyspinner. i passed my test when i just really got lucky and then had an accident the next day.

take as many as you feel you need to before you're super confident and please be careful.

  5. I was gonna say 40 before i read on.

The problem with the steering is that you have to understand the car much better.... Its never easy to explain, but if you think of the "Carriage" as a mechanical contraption, which you have to vigorously control, you should get a better idea, or maybe "approach" to it. - Once again it only takes practice!

I took around 35 lessons although I didn't need them, and what you have to remember is that a lot of other people will have "had a go" in other peoples vehicles before they actually started their driving lessons!

    Hope this helps, Steve

  6. Everyone is different.. there is no standard time..its about confidence. When your instructor and you feel your ready then that is the time to do it.

Edit..don't feel under pressure just cos some peeps only need 10, others have lots and lots of lessons before they feel confident enough to take on the test and even then they could fail. It is entirely down to you. :-)

  7. Every 1 is different with some people it comes naturally unlike me i hated every lesson, but if you ask your instructor I'm sure he will give you an honest answer x
