Driving/Stop sign questions... please help?

Ok I'm taking lessons and I'm confused about something... You know when u have to stop at a stop sign... like first u stop, look both ways real quick then if its clear, you go?

Well what if you stop where the stop sign requires you to stop but you CANT SEE both ways cuz theres too many trees or a big car parked in the way? That happens to me alot and my instructor gets a little upset cuz what I do, if i cant see when I stop where I have to stop, I roll out (no gas) slowly a little with my foot covering the brake, roll out just enough so that I can peak both ways.

Is this wrong?

  1. i'm not sure why he would be upset, it really the only safe way to do it.

    this is what I do:

I make a complete stop where the sign requires me to do (behind the line/behind the sign)  then I roll out slowly with my foot on the break slightly (just enough for my break lights to stay on, that way the person behind me doesn't think that i'm going, and end up rearending me)  then once I can see, I stop again and check... then I go.

Go out in your car at night and, which the car on but still in park, watch the breaklight that's in the rear window... touch the break until you see how far you have to push it for the light to come on.  mine comes on with the slightest touch of the break peddle.

i think this is a good practice because a lot of accidents are caused by 'double stopping' which is what you are doing... stopping once where you are supposed to, then stopping again where you can see.  these accidents happen because the person behind you thinks you're going to go, so he/she thinks they can move up, and then they hit you.  So, if you make sure you keep your food on the break so your lights are still on, it will reduce the chances of the person hitting you.

ask your instructor what he thinks you should do in that situation.

    good luck.

  2. No, you are correct that is the by the book process as long as you first stop before the limit line. Tell your instructor to stop being a p***y!

  3. if i come to a stop sign and can't see i move up a little bit ....slowly to see. why stop. then go just because you think there is no one there? thats how accidents happen

  4. No. It's called being cautious. As long as you stop at the proper point before doing your little roll and look, you are correct in your thinking.

  5. Its the only way you can check!  Good luck with your lessons.

  6. no it sounds right thats what I do

  7. You STILL have to stop behind the limit line, BEFORE you enter the intersection.  That means a COMPLETE stop.  Then you can gradually roll out, looking to see that the way is clear before proceding through.

It MAY be that the instructor is upset because you don't make that complete stop.

Ask the instructor what he thinks you SHOULD be doing to do this kind of intersection safely.
