What makes a good driving distance? I don't think it;s strength because I am one of the strongest guys my age I know and I am hitting below 200 yards...is it mostly technique?

  1. definetely your swing.  Look at the average pga tour pro.   they have the stature of an average sized 15 year old girl and they can still hit is 300 plus.  I am not trying to insult you but it takes alot of practice to learn the golf swing.  The concepts are pretty basic but it takes along time.  Any man has strength to hit at least 250.

So my advise... get a good teacher who focuses on fundamentals and practice alot.

I am not saying the average male golf generally hits it 250 plus yards i am saying the average male is physically capable of hitting it 250 yards.  To be honest in my opinion that is kinda weak even.  I mean some the average pga tour player goes 280 and that is with ridiculously tough fairways.  If you are a big guy and you practise practise practise you can hit 300+ no problem.

  2. A good poke at your age should yield you at least 200+ yrds.  If your hitting the center of  the clubface with good tempo the distance will come.

Rely more on good contact. and never swing out of your shoes.

  3. Other than your age, you really don't give us much info on your built, so there really isn't a true way of telling  you if your drives are short, average or long.

I am 49 yo and hit it an average of 250 since I changed to the TM burner, but the other day a twosome (father and son) caught up with us on the course and the son was 12 yo and he was hitting it almost as long as we were and he wasn't a big kid, maybe 5'2" 120 lbs.

  4. It's not true that any man ought to be able to hit it 250. According to USGA research, the average male golfer hits the ball about 200 yards, but THINKS he hits it 30 yards longer.

The average senior hits it 180 and also has the same 30 yard delusion.

The average drive on the PGA Tour is 283 yards. The thought that there are lots of guys out there on public courses hitting it 250+ is just not realistic.

    You're average.

  5. I realize you're fishing for compliments here, but I'd say your average.  The quality of the driver is irrelevant, if you hit it on "the screws" it will go straight with respectable distance... the improvement in new technology is increasing the sweet spot.

Like the other poster said, you really shouldn't be concerned with distance, that will come with practice, what you SHOULD be concerned with is making solid contact, which is typically a result of a controlled swing.

Not one of the guys who compete in the long drive competitions is in the top 135 on the PGA tour even though they would have a CLEAR advantage in reaching greens under regulation.

So you're saying I'm not going to get the "Best Answer" vote?

  6. you probably actually swing faster when you think you arent because you are in more control of the swing.  trying to swing hard can get you out of rhythm and actually cause a slower swing.  Just take a nice smooth swing and distance will come
