I have been selected to become a dog trainer with PetSmart(new name, used to be Petsmart) I'm required to go to the New Orleans location for two weeks to learn. The hotel, gas, seminar, supplies is all paid so I have to pay for food. What is the cheapest possible grocery items to take along. And how much do I take? What should be enough?

This is my first out of state travel experience. I appreciate any advice anyone may offer.

  1. Take non-perishable foods (in tins), especially things that don't need re-heating/cooking. Canned fruits are good, as are things that can easily be microwaved in the hotels microwave (assuming one is available for the public/in your hotel room).

    Cereals, canned foods, etc.

You basically will need to buy food there, but some stuff you can take.

  2. New Orleans location?

    Elmwood, Harvey or Kenner?

the Elmwood store has many grocery stores around it.

    Wal_Mart is very close.

the Kenner and Harvey have less but still many within short driving distance.

does your room have a fridge/ microwave? or kitchenette?

    some have free breakfast.

  3. There are grocery stores in New Orleans and it's unlikely the prices will be very different from wherever you live, so certainly don't bother taking along anything that is perishable.

You also need to find out what is alowed by the hotel where you will stay.  Most hotels do not allow a hot plate or anything with an open flame.  However, microwave ovens are usually OK. Ask the hotel if they can provide one for your room as you will be there for two weeks.  Many hotels will provide a microwave on request.  Same with a small refrigerator.

You don't need a car to get around in the French Quarter, Central Business District, or Warehouse District. Also, the parking regulations are Byzantine and there are lots of Parking Control Agents. Park in a lot or garage if you visit the city center,

The regional transit authority (www.norta.com) sells 1 and 3 day passes that offer unlimited use of buses and streetcars for the day(s) you select. There are also lots of taxicabs.

Hope you have a great time!
