hello, thanks for any ideas that you may have - send them through as we are totally open to ideas!

We are a family of 5 (aged 2, 5, 7 ) and we have motorhomed before we had our last child and drove from Brisbane to sydney, this time we want to fly to adelaide to visit our friends ( have 5/6 nights with them) then drive to darwin???

any ideas on driving times to darwin

caravan parks are there lots around this area

has anyone done this with kids!

an area from adelaide that we could go to woth our friends before going on our trip ( ie port augusta? kangaroo island?)

how long (days) would you say to allow for the drive from adelaide - darwin - allowing plenty of time for constant kid loo stops! ice cream stops! and for us to have a few days in good places!

also any good websites???

sorry alot to ak - so any ideas hugely welcome

  1. I hope you realise there is nothing between adelaide and darwin, at all. Its just desert. Ice cream stops? You will be lucky to have petrol stops.

Uluru is "on the way", but "on the way" means a 5 hour diversion from the main highway.

On your last trip from brisbane to sydney there was a town every 5 miles, lost of cool stuff, to see, adelaide to darwin is very different. Don't get me wrong, it is an epic drive, and something very few people do, but it is very long and very dusty.

  2. Ignore the previous post, there is plenty to do and see between Adelaide and Darwin. It is a little over 3000km so decide how far you want to travel each day and that will tell you your driving time.

It is a bitumen road all the way. First stop is Port Augusta. After that, things are a bit sparse between there and Alice Springs apart from Woomera and Coober Pedy although there are some remote service stations along the road.. North of Alice, there are plenty of stops and you will see the desert slowly transform into the tropical savannah and then the tropical woodland of the Top End. Places worth a visit are Barrow Creek, Tennant Creek, Daly Waters, Mataranka, Katherine and Adelaide River before you get to Darwin.

Get a good map before you go and check out where are good places to stop. You will be able to buy icecream at any servo.

  3. How about Adelaide to Melbourne, there is a lot more to see and do, eg Adelaide hills, Naracoorte caves and the swimming lake, Mt Gambier and its Blue Lake, Great Ocean Rd with the 12 Apostles, and there are plenty of places to stay - perhaps allow at least 5 days for such a trip to give plenty of time to explore each place?

Whatever you decide to do it is well worthwhile going to Kangaroo Island if you have the opportunity, there is heaps to do for a few days with the family. It's cold and windy on the Island's coast though, so bring plenty of warmies.
