  1. I would go to Laredo, TX, and take Hwy 85 or Hwy 1 to Monterrey and then HWY 57 to San Luis Potosi to Guanajuato. I have only taken the San Luis Potosi to Guanajuato portion. Just stay on the carretera all the way unless you have a specific site seeing destination..

  2. Jessica - I left Atlanta ( Lawrenceville/Tucker - 40 years !) and retired in Acapulco. I hope you realise the fees to bring a car across the border and the hassle. Mexican insurance , tags and such - about $400 depending on the car. You also NEED to stay on the toll highways for safety and ease. Plan on about another $300 or more in tolls - they are expensive. Dont travel at night as its far more risky should your car break down or something.

I considered bringing my car when I moved , but changed my mind. I got a simple Rand Mcally road map at Kroger and it had a page of all Mexico. Then I mapped out what I thought was a good route. I also asked a couple of my Mexican buddies to map out a good safe course. All agreed the toll highways were the best way but pricey.

Dont know your reasoning for driving but did want to give you a heads up on the $$$$ involved as it is a hassle to get the proper paperwork at the border crossing so reconsider if you can.
