Driving from Liverpool England to Lyon France?! ADVICE! :)

Hi there

I am moving to Lyon, France for 6 months and then to Barcelona, Spain for 6 months for my studies. I obviously have a load of stuff to take with me and was considering flying from where I live (Liverpool) but am worried because the weight restrictions on budget airlines are pretty c**p.. and I have a lot of stuff being the average girl lol!

My friend suggested driving down. I wondered

a) how long this would take??

b) how much it would cost in petrol.. i have a Toyota Yaris 1.3 SR that I usually drive at 75 mph on the motorway.

What would you do in my situation?

p.s. my boyfrienfd would probably come with me in this situation and leave my car in France..and he fly home after a week.. then 6 months later maybe I could drive to Barcelona from there.. I don't know lol but my car is right hand drive !

X

  1. If your MOT runs out while you are away you need to get back to the UK for another MOT or your insurance will no longer be valid. If your car is new you have 3 years but if not at least get a new MOT before you go which will give you a year. Enjoy the trip.

  2. You need to find out the mileage from RAC website.

They even tell you the petrol etc

Driving in France is easy i have driven around Paris many times.

Make sure you have sat nav for Europe. without that it is a bloody nightmare.

It will take you hours and you will need to swap drivers.

Good luck in your studies and enjoy it! x

  3. If driving from L'Pool to London is no problem for you then Calais to Lyon is just the same. On the French motorways just drive on the right Which is their inside lane.

I drove from Aberdeen to Morocco in a week with no problems at all. In fact Aberdeen to Carlisle was the hardest part.

No idea of cost but use Google Earth to calculate the mileage.

  4. You could consider renting a van with unlimited mileage (dont forget to mention that you are going abroad and get cover) in the name of your boyfriend.

I know you could do that in France (provided you have a valid credit card) I did it to move all my belongings northwards from Montpellier.

For one year total, you might consider buying a small inexpensive car (for as low as € 350), or better yet, a moped or scooter since both Lyons and Barcelona are plagued with traffic problems.

Also check with the railroad, I know that in France particularly, they had special schemes (through SERNAM) to send your belongings to your holiday address and back. It could work for you (used to be called Petite Vitesse). Worked super for a couple of suitcases and trunks.
